Smooth and finish surfaces of poured concrete, such as floors, walks, sidewalks, roads, or curbs using a variety of hand and power tools. Align forms for sidewalks, curbs, or gutters; patch voids; and use saws to cut expansion joints.

  • Set the forms that hold concrete to the desired pitch and depth, and align them.
  • Preparing of the site.
  • Consolidating and compacting of concrete.
  • Edging, jointing, and grooving of concrete.
  • Application of dry, wet and epoxy grouts.
  • Check the forms that hold the concrete to see that they are properly constructed.
  • Spread, level, and smooth concrete, using rake, shovel, hand or power trowel, hand or power screed, and float.
  • Monitor how the wind, heat, or cold affect the curing of the concrete throughout the entire process.
  • Direct the casting of the concrete and supervise laborers who use shovels or special tools to spread it.
  • Produce rough concrete surface, using broom.
  • Mold expansion joints and edges, using edging tools, jointers, and straightedge.
  • Clean chipped area, using wire brush, and feel and observe surface to determine if it is rough or uneven.
  • Signal truck driver to position truck to facilitate pouring concrete, and move chute to direct concrete on forms.
  • Apply hardening and sealing compounds to cure surface of concrete, and waterproof or restore surface as required by contract documents.

Responsibilities

  • Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications.
  • Ability to use mixers, and grinding equipment.
  • Must be proficient in the use of hand and power tools.
  • Must be able to set up and assemble rigging and hoisting equipment.
  • Must be able to set up and assemble ladders and scaffolds.
  • Repairing and modifying of concrete.
  • Ability to operate basic construction equipment, such as forklifts and loaders.
  • Ability to perform duties and operation of tools of the trade in strict compliance with OSHA rules.

Qualifications

  • 2 years of related experience.
  • Must be able to illustrate journeyman level knowledge on selecting, mixing, pouring, and finishing concrete.
  • Must have knowledge on materials, tools, and processes involved with basic building techniques and form construction.

Experience working with carpentry, concrete and rebar.

  • 3 years of related experience.
  • Must be able to illustrate journeyman level knowledge on selecting, mixing, pouring, and finishing concrete.
  • Must have knowledge on materials, tools, and processes involved with basic building techniques and form construction.

  • All employees must pass Non-DOT pre-employment drug screening and follow all UIC Non-DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Program guidelines and requirements.

If working on a DOT project, employees must pass a DOT pre-employment drug screening and follow all DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Program requirements.

 

The pay rate is Base $38.50 Fringe $25.91.
