Overview

LICENSCED PRACTICAL NURSE (MMADS):

 

Bowhead seeks a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to join our team in supporting the Medication Management, Administration, and Distribution Services (MMADS) effort located at Fort Leavenworth, KS. The MMADS effort provides medication management, administration, and distribution services to the Midwest Joint Regional Correctional Facility (MJRCF) and the Unites States Disciplinary Barracks (USDB). The LPN will manage and distribute medication to the inmates.

 

About this contract:

 

On average there is approximately 200 inmates at the USDB, 1301 North Warehouse Rd and 100 inmates at the MWJRCF, 831 Sabalu Rd, Fort Leavenworth, KS which require medication. The medication call at each location is four times a day. The amount of medication distributed is between one and five pills per inmate. Types of distribution are pills and injections. Inmates give themselves the injections for diabetes. The LPN will distribute the pills and injections to the inmates. The LPN will not ever give injections. There are approximately 500 pills and ten injections for the USDB and approximately 250 pills and seven injections at the MWJRCF per medication call. Each call last roughly 45-60 minutes. Each shift will work 2 calls: 1rst shift 4a.m – 2p.m & 2nd shift 1p.m – 10:30p.m.

 

Medication Calls:

 

- 1st call starts at 5:15a.m

- 2nd call starts at 11:55a.m

- 3rd call starts at 4:35p.m

- 4th call starts at 9p.m

Responsibilities

  • Work under the supervision of a registered nurse and may supervise unlicensed nursing assistants and other LPNs.
  • Prepare, set up and deliver daily inmate medications.
  • Observe and report any reactions and/or side effects to medication taken by the inmate.
  • Documents the administered medication on the patient’s medication administration record (MAR).
  • Must be able to conduct lifesaving measures in emergency situations, including but not limited to: CPR, deploying the AED, bag recitation, assessing and treating trauma, and reading of vital signs.
  • Provides nursing care requiring an understanding of diseases and illnesses sufficient to enhance communications with physicians, registered nurses, and patients.
  • Follows general instructions in addition to established policies, practices and procedures, uses judgment to vary sequence of procedures based on patient's condition and previous instructions.
  • Supervisory approval for requested deviations is given routinely.
  • Guidance is provided for unusual occurrences.

Qualifications

  • Possess a diploma as a graduate from a nationally accredited or state approved vocational nursing program.        
  • Possess a current unrestricted registered nurse license and be able to obtain and maintain an unrestricted registered nurse license from either the State of Kansas or Missouri with six months of hire. 
  • Have and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from The American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers.
  • Intermediate to advanced level skills in Microsoft Office software suite - Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and outside contacts.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds on occasion.
  • Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged period amounts of time.
  • Must be able to twist, bend, and squat periodically.

 

SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS: There are currently no Security Clearance requirements for this position; however, candidates must be able to successfully pass a background check. Due to the location of this work, US Citizenship is required.
