UIC Construction, LLC specializes in construction projects in remote locations throughout Alaska with challenging logistics and weather conditions. During the company’s 30-plus years of working in Alaska and the Lower 48, UIC Construction has completed well over $1 billion in construction projects over a diverse variety of project types and sizes. UIC Construction’s capabilities include the following services: preconstruction planning and estimating; Arctic construction and remote site logistics; and design/build and fixed-price construction. These services encompass both civil and building construction with a focus on providing employment opportunities throughout the communities of Alaska. The advertised position will require a crane operator to operate mechanical boom and cable or tower and cable equipment to lift and move materials, machines, or products in many directions.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Crane Operator on commercial projects will be able to operate a 30 Ton Grove All Terrain Crane or size crane available for the work.
  • Responsible for lift planning.
  • Daily inspection of Crane for safety prior to operation.
  • Start engine and maintain a safe working environment.
  • Move levels and pedals to rotate and move Crane; raise and lower Crane boom and load line in response to signals, as directed.
  • Inspect and lubricate cables, pulleys, guides, drums, and rigging gear.
  • Report any incident, situations, or activity that may affect the company’s ability to operate safely, ethically, and profitability to the Superintendent or General Foreman.
  • Perform duties and operation of equipment of the trade in strict compliance with OSHA rules.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge & Critical Skills/Expertise:

  • Must have current Crane certification compliant with OSHA standards.
  • Ability to demonstrate safe operation and knowledge of the equipment around ground personnel.
  • Fluent knowledge of Crane signals.
  • Ability to review, understand, and comply with load charts.
  • Be able to understand and use rigging methods and equipment.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Perform routine maintenance on equipment and determine when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
  • Determine and troubleshoot causes of operating errors.
  • Running, maneuvering, navigating, or driving vehicles or mechanized equipment, such as forklifts, passenger vehicles, aircraft, or watercraft.
  • Job requires being detail-oriented and thorough in completing work tasks.
  • Job requires being reliable, responsible, dependable, with a punctual and on time work history.
  • Must maintain open & responsive communication with foreman & superintendent and perform good verbal and written communication.
  • Must be well organized and demonstrate the ability to perform in a proficient manner the assigned duties.

Qualifications

Required Experience:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Must have current crane certification compliant with OSHA standards.
  • Minimum of Four (4) years of related experience
  • Experience operating Rough Terrain, Crawler, or Truck cranes.
  • Experience operating cranes 30 tons and over.

 

Physical Demands:

  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
  • Extensive physical activity. Requires strenuous physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects over 50 pounds.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, outside weather conditions, and vibration.
  • The employee is frequently exposed to high, precarious places and risk of electrical shock and loud noise levels.
  • When operating equipment, subject to constant jarring of body due to jerking movement of equipment and operating on uneven surfaces.
  • Must be able to sit in the operator’s seat of equipment and safely reach all pedals, switches, levers, buttons, etc. required to safely operate the equipment.
  • Must be able to sit in the operator’s seat of equipment and have an adequate field of vision of all instruments, gauges, warning lights, as well as an acceptable field of vision out of the windows and/or mirrors.
  • Must have the ability to adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle quickly and repeatedly to exact positions.
  • Must have the ability to coordinate two or more limbs (for example, two arms, two legs, or one leg and one arm) while sitting, standing, or lying down.
  • Must have the ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
  • Must have the ability to time your movements or the movement of a piece of equipment in anticipation of changes in the speed and/or direction of a moving object or scene.
  • Must have the ability to quickly respond (with hand, finger, or foot) to a signal (sound, light, picture) when it appears.

 

Working Conditions:

Applicant may be subject to environmental conditions of extreme cold, noise exposure, constantly changing work environment, irregular surfaces, slippery surfaces, moving equipment, open excavations, temporary structures, and general construction hazards.

Job site will contain light to heavy equipment, small to large equipment, materials, communication equipment, and tools.

People will be standing, walking, sitting, signaling, and talking around the jobsite; as an operator, it is imperative to remain aware of these conditions.
