Overview

Qayaq Construction seeks a Heavy Duty Field Mechanic. This position supports Alaska-based operations by coordinating equipment repairs and maintenance for all heavy-duty and miscellaneous construction equipment. Working closely with the Qayaq Construction Equipment Manager and reporting to the Heavy Duty Shop Foreman, the role ensures that maintenance activities are performed efficiently and on schedule. This position plays a key role in maintaining equipment readiness to support ongoing field operations.

Responsibilities

Essential functions will include:

  • Coordinate with the Heavy Duty Shop Foreman and Field Mechanics to identify and prioritize equipment repair and maintenance needs.

  • Identify additional service requirements discovered during inspections or servicing.

  • Assist in diagnosing equipment issues and conducting timely repairs.

  • Support procurement by identifying necessary parts and wear components for upcoming repairs.

  • Follow guidance and direction from the Equipment Manager and Shop Foreman to improve efficiency and performance.

  • Utilize electronic diagnostic tools to troubleshoot equipment issues.

  • Inspect mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems to determine faults and recommend solutions.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge & Critical Skills/Expertise:

  • Strong technical knowledge of heavy equipment systems and repair practices.

  • Proficiency in using diagnostic tools and interpreting fault codes.

  • Solid understanding of construction equipment technologies and components.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize in a fast-paced work environment.

  • Skilled in problem-solving and critical thinking related to equipment diagnostics and repair strategies.

Qualifications

Required Experience:

  • Post-secondary degrees in diesel technology, heavy equipment mechanics, small engine repair, engineering or similar. May be substituted with 10 years HD shop experience.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must possess Class A CDL with Hazmat Endorsement.
  • Must be familiar with CAT, John Deere and all other Competitive products.

Physical and Mental Demands:

  • Able to crawl and climb on/under machines.
  • Able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 60 pounds.
  • Able to walk over construction/excavation sites (irregular terrain).
  • Able to stoop, bend, kneel and stand.
  • Able to operate a motor vehicle day and night.

Working Conditions:

  • Requires ability to work outside in all weather conditions.
  • Frequent exposure to irritation or discomfort from dust, heat, cold, fumes, and hard, damp floors and ground.
  • Works on parts systems that are dirty, oily, or greasy.
  • Frequently exposed to possibility of receiving cuts, burns, bruises, and sprains while working on equipment.
  • Exposed to the hazards of working around machinery with moving parts.
  • Potential exposure to loud noises.
  • May at times work with various chemicals such as solvents, oils, fluids, and lubricants. MSDS are available.
  • Ability to handle hazardous materials with proper protection.
  • Required to wear various levels of PPE (hearing protection, respiratory protection, safety glasses; hard hats, knee pads, insulated rubber or leather gloves, fall protection, and protective clothing.
  • Some safety items may be uncomfortable to wear or use and may have to be worn or used for long periods.
