Overview

UMIAQ Design is seeking a registered Civil Engineer to support a diverse portfolio of challenging projects throughout both rural and urban Alaska. With several recent large project awards and ongoing support contracts, the successful candidate will contribute to a variety of efforts, working both independently and as part of multidisciplinary teams. Current and upcoming projects include urban site development, rural road design, water distribution and wastewater collection systems, landfill development and closure, and unique, Alaska-specific engineering challenges. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of meaningful work in dynamic environments across the state.

Responsibilities

Essential functions will include:

  • Work under the direction of a Senior Civil Engineer, with increasing responsibility based on performance and demonstrated capability.

  • Assist in the planning, design, and construction administration of civil engineering projects.

  • Conduct site visits and field investigations to support project planning and design.

  • Coordinate with clients, stakeholders, and regulatory agencies throughout project development.

  • Prepare design and construction documents across all project phases.

  • Support the bidding process, including development of bid documents and contractor coordination.

  • Provide construction administration services and assist with project closeout.

  • Direct and coordinate drafting and technical support staff.

  • Collaborate with internal team members and external consultants across multiple disciplines.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience working as a Civil Engineer in a design-related role.

  • Registered as a Professional Civil Engineer (or Environmental Engineer) in Alaska, or currently registered in another state with the ability to obtain Alaska registration through reciprocity within a reasonable time.

  • Strong knowledge of civil engineering design principles, preparation of construction documents, and traditional construction methods.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience in water and sewer system planning and design is preferred but not required.

  • Experience with AutoCAD drafting is a plus.

Physical and Mental Demands:

  • Must be able to travel to remote project locations using various modes of transportation.

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 40 pounds.

  • Must be able to walk and work on unimproved terrain and active construction sites, often in varying weather conditions.

 

Working Conditions

  • May require travel to remote areas of Alaska throughout the year.

  • Must be able to work in a variety of environmental conditions.

  • Field assignments may involve exposure to harsh weather, rugged terrain, and limited access to amenities.

  • Work may be conducted in both indoor office settings and outdoor field environments, including active construction sites.
